All that Glitter and Glam – Met Gala 2019

Every year, a fundraising event called “The Met Gala” is held for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. Founded in 1948, The Met Gala is organized by Vogue and is reported to be the most exclusive social event in the world, with invite only guests attending the event. It is also noted to be one of the biggest fundraising nights in New York City.

The event is run on a different theme each year, and the attendees are to follow that theme and show case it through their costumes. The event is kicked off with a cocktail hour where the guests arrive on the red carpet, tour the exhibition, and get seated. A dinner party then takes place which includes entertainment and performances.

This year’s theme was indeed very extravagant, like every other. “Camp: Notes on Fashion”. Camp describes a style that is appealing to the eyes because of how different it is to normal fashion, and is rather classified as bad taste. With over 600 guests that attended the event, the designing of their clothes this year was really something that everyone spoke about for days. So here I am, talking about a few of my favorite designs from the event.

Lady Gaga

The very phenomenal Gaga is known for her out of the box style and her bold personality when it comes to designing clothes. From her turning up for the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards in her dress made out of meat, yes actual meat, to rocking her white shredded dress in white paint all over her body, Gaga has always been the very definition of CAMP. So, for this year’s Met Gala, Gaga had a whole performance ready to show off her clothes. She had layered a total of four clothes of top of each other. Appearing in her pink gown, Gaga walked on the red carpet and with the help of her team, designed her performance in a way where she took of layers to reveal her dresses underneath. The layers were so beautiful designed and so in place that no body saw this act coming and were left in awe once her performance took off. 3 cheers for Gaga for the effort!

Zendaya

My personal favorite was this Cinderella look by Zendaya. Zendaya showed up to the red carpet in a gray gown, just like the one Cinderella wears in all those Disney movies. Her stylist, Law Roach, walking besides her acted as her fairy godmother and once all cameras were facing Zendaya, her performance began with her godmother waving his wand around her, and her dress lighting up to a glowing blue color and also growing in size! Yes, that’s right. Her dress was designed with the safest electronic system that she wore underneath her gown. Tommy Hilfiger really did go over and above everyone’s expectation with designing this techy yet stunning dress.

Kim Kardashian

I chose to write about this dress particularly because I wanted to talk about how important a design team is, be it for your dress, your make up, or your hair, and how it can be a game changer. For the 2019 Met Gala, Kim Kardashian showed up in a dress that made it look like she was dripping wet. The dress was so realistically designed that for people like us who are sitting and judging from behind their screens, we actually had a moment of doubt in our minds of whether she is soaking wet or not. Kim’s vision for her look was to give a feel that she was emerging from water and that her design team gave her. From her make up to her dress to her hair, everything was on point and basically water!

Design is everything in fashion and these dresses are just a sight of what the design industry has in store for us in the future. Exciting, is it not?
